Types of stone

Quartz, Granite, Quartzite, Marble

Quartz

  • 93% natural quartz aggregates mixed with the remaining 7% of color pigments and polymer resins.
  • The patterns and colors that appear in quartz countertops are 100% artificial. The quartz itself is real.  Everything else was designed by man.
  • Engineered stone has the flaws engineered out.
  • Due to the presence of the resins, quartz counters are less prone to staining.
  • Quartz does not need to be sealed.
  • Quartz will fade if in direct sunlight.
  • Chipping is comparable to granite.

Granite

  • 100% natural.
  • Highly durable.  Granites do not etch. Easy to care for. Most granites are also 'scratch proof'.
  •  Withstands heat up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Granite is unusually strong, but it has a tendency to chip if it suffers a severe blow from a dropped pan.
  • Granites with larger crystals are more likely to chip or nick. This usually occurs near the sink if you have an under mount sink or near the edge of the stone.
  • Need to seal them every one to three years.

Marble

  • Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from recrystallized carbon.
  • Can be damaged by heat from pots. Use trivets.
  • Marble will stain. Oils, acidic foods (lemons), and wine will leave stains and etching. Spills should be wiped up as soon as possible.
  • Will need to be sealed periodically.
  • Tendency to chip.

Quartzite

  • Quartzite is a naturally occurring metamorphic rock that starts out as sandstone and evolves over time under intense heat and pressure.
  • Many of the varieties have a similar look to marble, but require much less maintenance.
  • Quartzite is not indestructible.  It should be sealed to help protect the surface from etching and stains.
  • Sealing should done at initial  install.
  • Reseal annually.
  • Quartzite will stain. Clean spills as soon as possible.
  • Can be damaged by heat. Use trivets.

We also have used alternative materials such as recycled glass and soap stone.
